KAL Magnesium Glycinate 400 mg in Pakistan
The magnesium map: which form is which, and how to read the label
Why Magnesium?
Magnesium is a mineral involved in hundreds of processes in the body. It contributes to:
- Normal muscle function
- Normal functioning of the nervous system
- Normal energy-yielding metabolism
- The reduction of tiredness and fatigue
- Electrolyte balance
- Normal protein synthesis
- The maintenance of normal bones and teeth
- Normal psychological function
Magnesium comes from food such as nuts (badam, kaju), pumpkin seeds, chickpeas, daal, spinach and whole grains. Highly refined foods, such as white flour and polished rice, contain less. Heavy sweating in Pakistan's summers also increases the body's loss of minerals, and a varied diet helps replace them.
The Magnesium Map
Magnesium is sold in several forms. Each is magnesium bound to a different partner molecule, and that affects how it feels in your body.
| Form | Partner | General notes |
|---|---|---|
| Magnesium oxide | Oxygen | Cheap and common; lower absorption; more likely to loosen stools |
| Magnesium citrate | Citric acid | Well absorbed; can have a laxative effect |
| Magnesium glycinate | Glycine (an amino acid) | A chelated form, generally gentle on the stomach |
| Magnesium malate | Malic acid | Often used in energy-focused blends |
| Magnesium sulfate | Sulfate | Used in Epsom salt baths; not a typical oral supplement |
Why glycinate? Because magnesium is bound to the amino acid glycine, many people find this form easier on the digestive system than oxide or citrate. Research comparing forms is still developing, so we do not claim that glycinate is better for every person.
The Label Math: Compound vs Elemental Magnesium
This is the most important thing to understand before comparing magnesium products.
- Compound weight is the total weight of the magnesium glycinate (the magnesium plus its partner).
- Elemental magnesium is the weight of the magnesium itself, and this is the number that counts toward your daily intake and upper limit.
Magnesium glycinate contains roughly 10 to 14 percent elemental magnesium by weight, depending on the exact form. So a capsule with 400 mg of magnesium glycinate may provide only around 40 to 56 mg of elemental magnesium, while a product labelled "400 mg elemental magnesium" gives much more.
| Label says | What it means |
|---|---|
| "Magnesium (as magnesium glycinate) ___ mg" | Elemental magnesium amount, listed in the Supplement Facts panel |
| "Magnesium glycinate 400 mg" | May refer to the compound; check the elemental amount |
This product: [copy the elemental magnesium per serving from your label, and the serving size, for example "2 tablets"]
Understanding the Numbers
| Group | Daily requirement (US guidance) |
|---|---|
| Adult men | 400 to 420 mg |
| Adult women | 310 to 320 mg |
| Pregnancy | 350 to 360 mg |
| Upper limit from supplements (adults) | 350 mg of elemental magnesium |
The upper limit applies to magnesium from supplements and medicines, not from food. If your label shows more than 350 mg of elemental magnesium per day, ask your doctor before using it.
Ingredient Breakdown
| Nutrient | Amount per serving | Form |
|---|---|---|
| Magnesium | [elemental amount, confirm on label] | Magnesium glycinate (chelate) |
| Other ingredients | [copy from label] |
Format: [tablet / capsule, confirm]
Serving size: [as per label]
How to Take It
- Take [serving as directed on the label].
- Take it with food if you have a sensitive stomach.
- If the label suggests more than one tablet, you may split the serving across two meals.
- Many people take magnesium in the evening, though any consistent time works.
- Drink water through the day.
Spacing: magnesium can interfere with the absorption of some medicines. Leave at least 2 hours between magnesium and tetracycline or quinolone antibiotics, thyroid medicine (levothyroxine), and bisphosphonate bone medicines. Ask your pharmacist.
What to Expect
Magnesium glycinate is generally well tolerated. Taking more than your body can handle may cause loose motions, stomach cramps or nausea. If this happens, reduce the amount and speak to a doctor.
Who Should Speak to a Doctor First
- People with kidney disease, since the kidneys remove excess magnesium
- People with heart rhythm problems or low blood pressure on medication
- Pregnant or breastfeeding women
- Anyone taking regular prescription medicines, including diuretics
- Anyone buying for a child
Storage
Keep the bottle tightly closed in a cool, dry place away from sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
