Twinlab Omega-3 Fish Oil in Pakistan

The fish oil quality checklist: seven things to check on any bottle

Not all fish oil is the same. Two bottles can look identical and differ widely in what is inside. Use this checklist on any fish oil, including this one.

Check 1: How Much EPA and DHA Per Serving?

The front of the bottle may say "1,000 mg fish oil", but the active omega-3s are EPA and DHA, and they usually make up only part of the oil.

What to findThis product
Total fish oil per serving[from label]
EPA per serving[from label]
DHA per serving[from label]
Total omega-3 per serving[from label]
Servings per bottle[from label]

Why it matters: EPA and DHA together contribute to the normal function of the heart (at 250 mg per day combined), and DHA contributes to the maintenance of normal brain function and vision (at 250 mg per day).

Check 2: Which Form of Fish Oil?

FormNotes
Natural triglycerideThe form found in fish; often considered well absorbed
Re-esterified triglycerideProcessed to concentrate omega-3, then converted back to triglyceride form
Ethyl esterCommon in concentrated products; generally less absorbed on an empty stomach unless taken with fat

This product: [confirm the form on your label]

All forms are absorbed better with a meal that contains fat.

Check 3: Is It Fresh?

Fish oil is sensitive to heat, light and air, and can go rancid. Signs of poor quality include a strong, sharp fishy smell, a bad aftertaste, or lasting fishy burps. Pakistan's hot summers make storage especially important:

  • Store in a cool, dark cupboard.
  • Close the cap tightly.
  • Never leave the bottle in a car, on a sunny shelf, or near the stove.

Some brands list freshness measures such as an antioxidant (vitamin E) in the formula. [Check your label for added antioxidants.]

Check 4: Has It Been Tested?

Fish can carry environmental contaminants such as mercury and other heavy metals. Quality fish oil is purified to remove them. Check whether the brand states third-party testing or purity standards. [Add only claims that are printed on your pack or confirmed by your supplier.]

Check 5: Where Does the Fish Come From?

Look for the fish source on the label, such as anchovy, sardine, mackerel or other small oily fish, and any sustainability statement. [Confirm from your label.]

Check 6: What Else Is in the Softgel?

CheckWhy
Softgel shell materialGelatin is animal-derived; some shoppers prefer to avoid it
FlavouringNatural lemon or similar helps reduce aftertaste
Added vitaminsSome products add vitamin E or D3; count them in your totals

Gelatin-free is not the same as halal-certified, so only mention halal if it is printed on the pack.

Check 7: What Is the Price Per Day?

Price per day = bottle price ÷ servings per bottle. Then compare price per 1,000 mg of EPA + DHA, which is a fairer measure than price per softgel.

Why Omega-3 Intake Can Be Low in Pakistan

  • Oily fish is not an everyday food for most households, and freshwater fish contains less omega-3 than oily sea fish.
  • Fried and reheated fish loses some of its nutritional quality.
  • Diets high in omega-6 oils and low in omega-3 are common.

EPA and DHA contribute to normal heart function at 250 mg per day. We do not claim it treats or prevents heart disease. Talk to your doctor about your heart health.

Usually yes, and taking them with a fat-containing meal can help absorption. Check labels and ask your doctor if unsure.

For most healthy adults at label doses, yes. Very high omega-3 intakes can affect bleeding, so do not exceed the label dose.

No, it is made from fish. Vegetarians may consider algae-based omega-3.
