Country Life Chelated Zinc 50 mg in Pakistan

How much zinc is in your food, and where does a 50 mg supplement fit?

How Much Zinc Are You Getting From Food?

Before choosing a zinc supplement, it helps to know what a normal day of food provides. Approximate amounts per serving:

FoodApprox. zinc
Beef or mutton, cooked (about 85 g)5 to 7 mg
Chicken, cooked (about 85 g)2 to 3 mg
Pumpkin seeds (about 28 g)2 mg
Yogurt (1 cup)1.5 to 2 mg
Cooked chickpeas (half a cup)1 to 1.5 mg
Cooked daal (half a cup)1 to 1.5 mg
Roti / whole-wheat atta (1 piece)Under 1 mg, and phytates reduce absorption

What this shows: a diet built around roti, daal and vegetables, with meat only occasionally, can fall short of daily needs. A day with meat, yogurt and pulses gets much closer.

Daily requirement (US guidance): 11 mg for men, 8 mg for women, with slightly higher amounts in pregnancy and breastfeeding. The tolerable upper limit for adults is 40 mg per day.

Where 50 mg Fits

This capsule provides 50 mg of zinc, which is above the daily upper limit of 40 mg for adults and several times the daily requirement. That makes it a high-strength product, best used:

  • exactly as directed on the label, and
  • preferably for a limited period under the guidance of a doctor or pharmacist.

Food already gives you zinc, so a full 50 mg on top can push your total intake well above the limit if taken every day for a long time.

The Zinc and Copper Balance

Zinc and copper compete for absorption in the gut. Taking high doses of zinc for a long time can lower copper levels, which may lead to problems such as anaemia and weakened immune function.

Some supplement makers add a small amount of copper to zinc formulas to help keep this in balance. [Check your label: does this product contain copper?] Whether or not it does, avoid taking high-dose zinc for an open-ended period.

What "Chelated" Means

A chelated mineral is bound to another molecule, often an amino acid, to help keep it stable in the digestive tract. Many people choose chelated zinc for its absorption and tolerance. Research comparing zinc forms is limited, so we do not claim it is better than others. Check your label for the exact form.

How to Take It

  1. Take [1 capsule, or as directed on the label], with food. Zinc on an empty stomach often causes nausea.
  2. Leave about 2 hours between zinc and iron or calcium supplements.
  3. Ask your pharmacist about timing if you take antibiotics such as tetracyclines or quinolones, since zinc can reduce their absorption.
  4. Keep chai away from the capsule and drink it at another time.
  5. Add up the zinc from any multivitamin, immunity blend or lozenge you also use.

Who Should Speak to a Doctor First

It is above the adult upper limit of 40 mg per day. Follow your label and ask a doctor before regular use.

Meat, yogurt and pulses provide zinc, so you may already be meeting your needs. A blood test and your doctor can guide you.

The zinc is bound to another molecule to help keep it stable in the digestive tract.

High-dose zinc is best used for limited periods unless your doctor advises otherwise, since long-term high doses can lower copper.

Take it with food to avoid nausea.

Space them at least 2 hours apart.

Zinc contributes to the maintenance of normal hair, skin and nails as part of a balanced diet. Results vary.

It contributes to the normal function of the immune system. It does not prevent or cure illness.

Both are 50 mg. The difference is in the zinc form and other ingredients. See the comparison table above.
