KAL B12 Methylcobalamin 1,000 mcg in Pakistan

The plate check: how much B12 does your usual diet give you?

Why B12 Needs a Plate Check

Vitamin B12 comes almost entirely from animal foods. So your B12 intake depends heavily on what is on your plate. Here are three common eating patterns in Pakistan, with rough, approximate B12 totals.

Approximate B12 in common foods:

FoodServingApprox. B12
Liver (kaleji), cookedAbout 85 gVery high, often over 50 mcg
Fish, such as salmonAbout 85 gAround 2.5 mcg
Beef or mutton, cookedAbout 85 gAround 1.5 to 2.5 mcg
Milk1 cupAround 1.2 mcg
Yogurt1 cupAround 1 mcg
Egg1 largeAround 0.5 mcg
Chicken, cookedAbout 85 gAround 0.3 mcg
Daal, vegetables, fruit, rotiAny amountEssentially none

The daily requirement for adults is 2.4 mcg.

Three Plates

Plate A: The regular meat-eater. Beef or mutton a few times a week, chicken most days, eggs for breakfast, milk or yogurt daily. B12 intake usually meets or exceeds 2.4 mcg, though absorption can still be lower for older adults and people on certain medicines.

Plate B: The vegetarian who eats dairy and eggs. Daal, vegetables and roti, with milk, yogurt and eggs. B12 comes mainly from dairy and eggs. A typical day may reach the requirement, but intake can be borderline on days with little dairy.

Plate C: The strict vegetarian or vegan. Plant foods only. Daal, vegetables, fruit and grains provide essentially no reliable B12, so fortified foods or a supplement are the only dependable sources. Vegans are generally advised to use a B12 supplement.

Not sure which plate you are? The only way to know your B12 level is a blood test.

Who Else Should Think About B12?

Even with a good plate, some people absorb B12 less well:

  • Adults over 50, since stomach acid declines with age
  • People taking metformin or long-term acid-reducing medicines
  • People with digestive conditions or a history of stomach surgery
  • People whose doctor has found a low B12 level

About methylcobalamin: it is the active coenzyme form of B12, ready for the body to use. Another common supplement form is cyanocobalamin, a stable synthetic form that the body converts. Both can raise B12 levels in people who are low, and research comparing them is limited, so we do not claim that one is always better.

If your product is sublingual (dissolves under the tongue): studies generally show that sublingual and swallowed B12 raise levels similarly, so the choice is mostly about preference and convenience. [Confirm the format.]

Why Is It 1,000 mcg When I Need 2.4 mcg?

At large doses, the body absorbs only a small percentage of B12 (roughly 1 percent) by simple diffusion. Supplements therefore use large amounts so that a useful quantity gets through, and what is not absorbed is passed out of the body. No upper limit has been set for B12.

What B12 Does

Vitamin B12 contributes to:

  • Normal energy-yielding metabolism
  • Normal functioning of the nervous system
  • Normal red blood cell formation
  • Normal psychological function
  • Normal homocysteine metabolism
  • The reduction of tiredness and fatigue
  • The normal function of the immune system

How to Take It

  1. Take [serving as directed on the label].
  2. Many people take it in the morning or with lunch, because some find B vitamins slightly energising.
  3. Take it consistently. B12 supports levels over weeks, not for a same-day boost.
  4. Recheck your B12 level as your doctor advises.

Safety Notes

  • B12 is generally well tolerated. Rarely, people notice mild stomach upset, headache or skin reactions.
  • If you have a confirmed deficiency, do not rely only on over-the-counter supplements. Your doctor may recommend a specific dose or injections.
  • Tell your doctor about all your medicines and supplements.
  • Ask a doctor before use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding or have a health condition.
  • Keep out of reach of children.
