Bluebonnet Omega-3 1000 mg

Before you buy any fish oil, learn to read the label. Here is how.

The Number on the Front Is Not the Whole Story

Most shoppers see "1000 mg" and assume they are getting 1000 mg of omega-3. That is rarely the case, and it is the most common misunderstanding about fish oil.

"1000 mg" usually refers to the total fish oil in the softgel. The active omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA, make up only a portion of that oil. What matters for your money is how many milligrams of EPA and DHA you actually get.

What to look atWhy it matters

DHA per softgel[copy from your label]

Use these numbers when you compare Bluebonnet with any competing brand in Pakistan. Two bottles that both say "1000 mg" can contain very different amounts of EPA and DHA.

What Are EPA and DHA?

EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) are the two long-chain omega-3 fats found mainly in oily fish. Your body can make only tiny amounts from plant sources such as flaxseed, so getting them from fish or a fish oil supplement is the practical route.

  • EPA and DHA together contribute to the normal function of the heart (at 250 mg per day combined).
  • DHA contributes to the maintenance of normal brain function and normal vision (at 250 mg per day).

These are well-established intake levels used in nutrition guidance, so check that your total daily dose meets them.

Why Omega-3 Intake Can Fall Short in Pakistan

Oily fish is not a daily food for most households. Fish like sardines and mackerel are rich in EPA and DHA, but many families eat fish only occasionally, and freshwater fish typically contain less omega-3 than oily sea fish.

Frying changes things. Deep-fried fish is common, and heavy frying and reheating can reduce the quality of the fats.

Omega-6 heavy cooking oils. Common cooking oils are rich in omega-6 fats, and a diet with a lot of omega-6 and little omega-3 is a pattern nutrition experts point out.

Coastal vs inland access. Fresh sea fish is easier to find in Karachi than in inland cities.

How to Take It

  1. Take [1 softgel, or as directed on the label].
  2. Take it with a meal that contains some fat. This improves absorption and reduces fishy aftertaste.
  3. If you notice fishy burps, take it at the start of a meal, or freeze the softgels for a short time (only if you keep them sealed).
  4. Take it consistently. Omega-3 works over weeks and months, not days.

Keep It Fresh: The Pakistan Summer Rule

Fish oil is sensitive to heat, light and air, and can go rancid. In Pakistan's hot months:

  • Store in a cool, dark cupboard, never on a sunny shelf, in a car or near the stove.
  • Close the cap tightly after every use.
  • If a softgel smells sharply rancid or tastes very bad, do not use it.

It is common. Take the softgel with food, at the start of a meal, and store it in a cool place.

EPA and DHA contribute to normal heart function at 250 mg per day. We don't claim it treats or prevents heart disease, so discuss your heart health with a doctor.

Usually yes, and taking them together with a fat-containing meal can help absorption. Check labels and ask your doctor if unsure.

For most healthy adults at label doses, yes. Very high intakes can affect bleeding, so do not exceed the label amount without medical advice.

No, it is made from fish. Vegetarians may look at algae-based omega-3 instead.

Ask your doctor first. Do not start any supplement in pregnancy without advice.
